Find it Cheaper on Amazon!Find your item on Amazon, Save up to 75% and get free-shipping.I was in dire need of a low-cost purifier one winter because I was living in Beijing through the AQI 500+ airpocalypse: The mainstream purifiers I saw on the market cost $500-$1,000 each. But I did some research into how air purifiers work and found they're really just a fan and a filter. So I started building my own (How to Make a DIY Air Purifier) and testing them systematically against those $1,000 machines (Can a 450 RMB DIY remove as much particulate as a $1,000 IQ Air?).

How cheap can an activated carbon purifier be? I was focused on HEPA filters because I was most concerned about particulate pollution, but once I got a handle on particulate, I started testing activated carbon filters, which can capture gas pollutants.

air cleaner for 4 barrelI've got a day job already--I'm a cultural psychologist. We ship these carbon filters in China for 65 RMB (US$10). Obviously the big brands charge a lot more. For example, the Blue Air carbon filter costs about $100.

To make your own, you need three things: 1. A fan with a flat front2. An activated carbon filter3. A strap to hold the filter onto the fanHere's a setup I've tested in China. I call it the Cannon. Altogether (with HEPA filter), it runs 470 RMB (US$72), so you can certainly build a machine for less than $100.If you're not concerned about particulate pollution, you could make it cheaper by (1) doing away with the HEPA filter and (2) using a weaker fan. Why can you use a weaker fan? That's because most filters require a strong fan to push air through, but carbon filters work differently from particle filters. Particle filters are kind of like nets, which are hard to push air through. (I know I'm over-simplifying the physics here. You can read more about the physical processes of particle capturing here.) In contrast, carbon filters use adsorption. That's important because it means carbon filters are easier to push air through, so you could use a smaller fan, like this one I've tested in China: Cliff Lui brings up the question of whether any old carbon filter will work.

Carbon can be treated to get different types of gases, so there is some care required. You could use a big brand replacement filter. I've tested the carbon filters above for:1. Volatile organics compounds (VOCs) from cigarettes (probably mostly benzene). Here's how the carbon filters compared to a fan-only condition: 2. Formaldehyde, using formaldehyde solution straight from the factory:Here's what the activated carbon did to the formaldehyde:3. VOCs coming from remodeling. Here's a timelapse test video I made in Beijing: For fellow data nerds, I made the data and methods all open source (VOC tests, formaldehyde tests). The data is pretty clear: you can make a simple DIY carbon air purifier for far less than the big brands cost. In my own case, I passed up that $1,000 machine and now use $30-$75 DIY purifiers in my home in Beijing. P.S. Another great source for carbon tests are this guy's tests of several commercially available brands. His results also show that there are affordable and effective purifiers out there (although we need more data on effectiveness over time because some machines use very thin carbon filters).
