Filters use a rating system called the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (or MERV Rating). The MERV rating tells you how small a particle the filter can trap. Filters are given a MERV rating from 1 to 13, with 13 filtering out the most airborne contaminants. For best results, you should choose the highest level of filter that your unit can support.
