You may qualify for an Out-of-Area Extension if you (or a family member) and your Georgia-registered vehicle are temporarily located well outside of the 13-county emissions testing area of the state of Georgia due to school, military or business obligations. If you are unsure whether you or your vehicle are considered “well-outside” the 13 covered counties, please review the “Georgia Counties Within Driving Distance” and/or “Bordering States’ County List Requiring an Inspection” documents or contact GCAF at 1.800.449.2471 with the location of the school or business. Out-of-Area Extensions are valid for a maximum of one (1) year. You must apply for an Out-of-Area Extension each year prior to the vehicle registration renewal date. In addition, the vehicle must receive an emissions inspection once it returns to the metro Atlanta area. GCAF does not accept emission inspections from other states; however an emissions inspection from another state may be used to prove the vehicle is out of the area.

Emissions tests are valid for 12 months. Typically, your vehicle must be smog checked if it is: doesn't require emissions testing if it is 3 model years old or newer (see “Inspection Exemptions & Extensions" below). Generally, these extensions apply to vehicle owners who are outside of the testing area for school, business, or military purposes. Bring your vehicle to the station applicable to its model year: The GCAF provides a list of emissions testing locations by ZIP code. You don't have to have your vehicle inspected in the same county in which it is registered. Each station sets its own emissions testing fee; however, fees do not exceed $25. Once your vehicle passes, you'll receive a Georgia Vehicle Emission Inspection Report (VIR). The VIR is also entered electronically into the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) system. The GCAF provides the RepairWatch Public Report to help you find qualified repair stations. You are allotted 1 retest for free if you return to the same inspection station within 30 days of the first test; if your vehicle fails again, you must pay for another retest. The Georgia Vehicle Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Program consists of three emissions- and smog-related tests: Additionally, vehicles that are model year 1995 or older undergo a TSI or Accelerated Stimulation Mode (ASM2) test, which includes 25/25 testing (i.e. 25% load at 25 MPH) and 50/15 testing (i.e. 50% load at 15 MPH).
