The process of how your air handler and ductwork gets dirty is simple. Your air handler and ductwork can get contaminated in as little as one season of operation. One would think as long as I change my filter regularly my ductwork should be fine. However, it’s a fact that all store bought filters, even high efficiency filters, allow small dirt particles to pass right through them. Then one would think Electrostatic or HEPA filters are the answer. Although HEPA and Electrostatic filters are very efficient at capturing smaller particulates, they still allow small particles to pass through them. HEPA and Electrostatic filters have an adverse effect on airflow. Because HEPA and Electrostatic filters are very dense and tight weaved they make it harder for air to pass through their core. When air flow is reduced through the air handler’s coil, condensation issues arise within the air handler cabinet. As air flow is reduced below 350 CFM, the cold evaporator coil temperature transfers to other internal components including the ductwork.

In this case, condensation forms on the internal components of the air handler mentioned above. Tiny airborne dirt particles land in the condensation forming food for microbial or “mold” activity.
