Some months later, my laptop started to refuse to read some DVD. That was a kind of disturbing... I looked in internet and found a verrrrryyyy long thread on Apple Discussion forum with the similar issue, and all kinds of suggestions how to fix. NOW, the solution, which actually worked for me. Update: I came across a post, which explains with pictures and step-by-step instruction how to properly clean SuperDrive.This post may only be helpful to one person, but as I always say, if you can help just ONE person… then you may as well have not even bothered. But just in case this helps TWO people, I will post it anyway. Anyway, long story short, the quick cheap fix was to blow compressed air into the DVD slot. So, despite an error message that might lead you to assume a bad disc or some sort of drive or power failure, the culprit appears to just be dust. Could be the switch that is triggered when you insert the disk. To confirm you would have to disassemble the computer to take the drive out and check the switch operation with e.g. a multimeter. If faulty, it could just be dirt on the contacts or corrosion. Will this work even if it won't pul the disk in? I have cleaned it in the past with great success. Tried the cleaning, no luck :( I read somewhere that a firmware update for the superdrive created enomolous errors. Is there a way to step back to the original and to block the update? What I get is both of my supperdrives act up in my mac pro.

One superdrive refuses all burned disks and kiks em back out. The originals are fine but sometimes i get an error of no software to install like with my i life disk. Second try it installed fine. Same with Leopard install it took two pass to install. First time it ended with clean disk and restart try again. I did not clean anything just restarted and finished the install. Also the other drive I install a burned disk and it thinks I installed a new blank disk and it tells me to format it to burn data disk.
