Many people are very quick to assume that if they can shoot well off the bench they will be able to hunt well. Unfortunately that is not always the case, especially with airguns. Here are a handful of tips to help keep you prepared for the challenge of the hunt: It’s essential to have plenty of experience with any rifle before taking it into the field. Not only do you get used to the trigger release, but you get a good feel for the eye relief of the scope and the weight distribution of the gun itself. Understanding the behaviour of the animals you shoot is extremely important, as it allows you to predict how they will respond to different movements and in different environments. For example, one might look for Rabbits at midday and return home with an empty bag, while another more experienced hunter will head out at dusk and be more successful. A good hunter will also know how close he can get to the animal before spooking it. 3: Practice different Stances and Positions

Target practice usually consists of a stationery target placed downrange with no incline whatsoever and a comfy spot to rest your rifle. When hunting, however, there are no such luxuries, and you will often find yourself in awkward positions trying to rest your rifle correctly. The more you practice these positions, the better. FT and HFT are great for developing these skills. 4: Learn how to Range your Target When dealing with airguns, which generally have pretty loopy trajectories, you need to be sure of your ranges in order to predict where the pellet will fall. Laser rangefinders will do the job for you, but other methods include mil-dot range finding and using the parallax wheel on your scope. Find a method that works and become good at it! One can always learn the holdover points on the reticle of his scope, but it’s always useful to have cards handy in case you find yourself needing to place your shot in a very specific spot. Knowing the holdover values for every 5 meters will allow you to be more precise.

This can be done with Hawke’s Chairgun Pro software. 6: Be Careful where you Place your Shot There’s nothing worse than injuring an animal and watching it suffer. Learn the correct shot placement for the quarry you’ll be hunting and make sure you’re able to hit that spot. 7: Choose the Right Pellets! Many people make the mistake of looking for the most destructive pellet they can find. Hollowpoints certainly do more internal damage, but are not always very accurate. Rather find the pellet that’s the most accurate in your particular rifle and stick to it – If the shot is placed correctly, it won’t matter how much collateral damage is done. 8: Be Sure of your Target and what Lies Beyond Safety is important, and sometimes we’re faced with a situation where the animal you’re aiming at is dangerously close to livestock or an unsafe backstop. You can never be sure where that pellet is going to fly, and often always better to be safe than to take the risk.
