Stage 1 Upgrade Explained A Stage 1 Upgrade involves modifying a Harley-Davidson’s exhaust system, air filter and fuel metering system to allow it to increase available power, breathe more efficiently and allowing it to run as efficiently as possible. When the air filter is free-flowing and has a match-tuned exhaust, the performance from the bike greatly increased. This is thanks to moving more air and fuel through the engine to generate more torque and power. Additionally, Stage 1 Free Flow and Heavy Breather Air Filters deliver a sweet sounding exhaust system, as well as a big boost that you can feel with an extensive RPM range. Stage 1 Upgrade usually consists of recalibrating the air intake and exhausts systems together to improve the air flow by using specialist aftermarket accessories that are designed to improve performance.

A Stage 1 Upgrade does not involve the internal engine modification of a Harley-Davidson. Alternative Stage ¼ and Stage ½ Upgrades are also available, but are seen by many as a poor alternative to the full Stage 1 Upgrade. They are a cheaper substitute to a full Stage 1 Upgrade but do not provide the performance increases that many riders desire. The new Screamin’ Eagle SE120ST Crate Motor (P/N 19221-15, $5,695, installation labor cost not included) from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories is factory-engineered to pump up street performance and is designed for bolt-in installation in an original equipment-style Harley-Davidson Touring chassis with no required fabrication or engine mount relocation. The motor comes equipped with a Screamin’ Eagle 58mm Throttle Body that’s 18 percent larger than stock. The crankcase, cylinders and heads are painted black and feature machined aluminum highlights and chrome covers.
